WHAT WE BELIEVE

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of El Paso, Texas is a member of the world wide United Methodist Church. We gladly and joyfully believe, teach, and confess the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior of the World.  As we confess salvation to the world, we proclaim the truths of God’s Holy Word according to the doctrine of the Wesleyan tradition, the faith as it is taught by the Holy Scriptures and has faithfully been confessed throughout the history of the Christian Church. We are committed to the pure preaching of the Word and the right administration of the Holy Sacraments, as we share the Gospel with all people. We preach Jesus Christ crucified, risen, and reigning for the salvation of the world.

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all …” (1 Timothy 2:5)

THE GOSPEL

The Gospel is the Good News of God’s love for the world, which is made available only through His Son, Jesus Christ.

SALVATION

There is only one way for any individual to be eternally saved and this is through faith in the shed blood of Jesus on the cross of Calvary.  The Christian’s hope is grounded in the physical Resurrection of Jesus from the dead and the eternal life He freely offers to all through faith.

GOD’S WORD - HOLY SCRIPTURE

The Bible is the Inspired Word of God and is therefore the only source for truth in the faith and life of the believer.

THE SACRAMENTS (Sacred Acts)

We confess two sacraments, Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.  Through these “means” God is present in His grace to work the creation or strengthening of faith in the hearts of all people.

THE CHURCH

The Church of Jesus Christ is not a visible institution, but the reality of all believers, everywhere around the world.  All who confess Jesus Christ as Lord are collectively the one true Church of Jesus Christ.

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ, we understand our mission in the world is to be a reflection of Jesus for all to see.  As God’s people we seek to conform our lives to the life of Jesus as revealed in the Word of God.   Living for Jesus opens the way for each Christian to share the message of Jesus with the people of the world.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

God created Adam and Eve as the first parents of us all.  As God’s children in the world we affirm God’s design of marriage between one man and one woman. The union of husband and wife is a witness of the relationship of Christ and His bride, the Church. Christian parents are granted the gift of children, to whom they are to teach the blessings of God’s salvation in Jesus and service to the world.

SANCTITY OF ALL LIFE

As Christians who believe God is the author of all life, we affirm the value and worth of every human being.  We desire all people to understand God’s unfailing love for them.  We fully accept all people as unique creations of God and desire all to join us in affirming Jesus Christ as Lord.
