WHAT WE BELIEVE
St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of El Paso, Texas is a member of the world wide United Methodist Church. We gladly and joyfully believe, teach, and confess the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior of the World. As we confess salvation to the world, we proclaim the truths of God’s Holy Word according to the doctrine of the Wesleyan tradition, the faith as it is taught by the Holy Scriptures and has faithfully been confessed throughout the history of the Christian Church. We are committed to the pure preaching of the Word and the right administration of the Holy Sacraments, as we share the Gospel with all people. We preach Jesus Christ crucified, risen, and reigning for the salvation of the world.
“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all …” (1 Timothy 2:5)
GOD’S WORD - HOLY SCRIPTURE
As Methodist Christians, St. Mark’s UMC believes and confesses that the Bible is the Word of God. Given by God through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God is the rule of our faith and life. All which is affirmed by Scriptures is embraced! All which is rejected by Scripture is understood not to be the will of God for His people.
With Holy Scripture as the foundation of our faith, we seek to understand and apply the Word of God using the Traditions of the Church, our God given Reason, and our personal Experiences - (The Wesleyan Quadrilateral).
Understanding that people do err and our human reason and experience are fallible, the Word of God stands as the ultimate determining factor of all faith and life.
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:14-17)
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Pet. 1:19-21)
The Gospel - the Good News of salvation through faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ is the focus and reason for St. Mark’s UMC to exist. We believe, teach, and confess that the love of God moved Him to send His one and only Son into this world for our Salvation. Jesus, who is and has always been God, became a human being through the miracle of the incarnation. He is not and forever the God-Man who conquered sin and the grave by His death and resurrection. All who turn to Him in faith alone receive forgiveness of sin and the assurance of eternal life.
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18)
The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been entrusted to God’s people in this world, the Church, for the purpose of being proclaimed boldly for the salvation of all people in this world. We confess Jesus as the only means of salvation and His Gospel as it has been entrusted to the Church as the power of God to save.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Rom. 1:16)
THE SACRAMENTS (Sacred Acts)
Because faith is a matter of the heart and not of the mind or intellect, the reality of salvation through faith in Jesus is available to all people regardless of age. Therefore, we confess Baptism as a means of Grace through which the Holy Spirit is working to create faith in the heart and bring about the adoption of a child into the family of God.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Eph. 2:8-9)
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (1 Pet. 3:21)
The Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) is also a sacrament through which Jesus is actively coming to a sinful human being to offer forgiveness and life. We confess Jesus is present in the elements of the Lord’s Supper in a miraculous way, as He promised. His presence assures us of God love and forgiveness as He freely shares with all who receive the victory He accomplished on the cross.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matt. 26:26-28)
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. (Jn. 6:53)
The Church in the world is NOT the visible institution seen on earth. Rather, the Church is the collection of all who believe the Gospel through faith. Those who hold to the promise of God, that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His bodily resurrection have obtained forgiveness and eternal life for all who believe.
Christ has one Church which consists of all who confess His name on earth and all those who have obtained the victory and dwell with Him in heaven.
The visible church on earth is a human organization by which believes are joined in a common confess and purpose. In this church believers are fed and nourished with the Gospel and empowered to be witnesses for Christ in the world.
Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matt. 16:16-18)
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH
We confess Christ resurrected and ascended! He is reigning on the throne of God, ruling over all creation for the purpose of the Gospel. This is evidence of the grace of God which is still extending the offer of forgiveness and life to all who are in this world today. Christ will reign until the time appointed by the Father. He rules over all things in this world that the Church may be the Church and accomplish the mission of saving the world.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
THE RETURN OF CHRIST - JUDGMENT DAY
The Scripture declares the day will come when the Father directs Jesus to return in glory, not a second time to suffer, but to be revealed as God, and bring this world current existence to an end.
On that day the resurrection of all believers will take place in which their spirits who have dwelt in heaven will be reunited with their resurrected, glorified bodies. Those who believed in Jesus will enter body & spirit into eternity where they will dwell in the joy, peace, and love of God forever.
Judgment day will also see the resurrection of all unbelievers who will stand in judgment before the throne of God. Having trusted in themselves with no faith in Christ, they will be sent away from God to be forever judged for the sins they committed in their earthly lives.
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:11-15)
